At Coleham, we believe that all pupils should be given the opportunity to take part in regular, high quality P.E lessons. To ensure this, throughout the year, all classes receive 2 hours of P.E.; one hour which is indoors and one hour which is outdoors. Teachers structure P.E lessons as they would any other lesson with appropriate questioning, challenge and support given to the pupils.
During indoor P.E sessions, the focus is on movement/dance and gymnastic activities. One half term per year, these indoor sessions are led by our specialist P.E teacher. Our P.E specialist works alongside the class teacher to enhance and develop the class teacher’s skills and empower them to deliver quality indoor P.E lessons themselves.
During outdoor P.E sessions, the children take part in a range of invasion games, striking and fielding games, net/wall games and outdoor adventurous activities. These sessions are led by an experienced sports coach; this helps the school to ensure that the pupils have the opportunity to experience high quality P.E lessons with good outcomes for all children participating.
From year 3 upwards, each year group complete a block of swimming and water safety instruction held at the Quarry swimming pool. These sessions may be led by a teacher themselves or an experienced swimming instructor depending on the individual child’s ability.
There are also various after school sports clubs which the children are able to attend and sports activities, delivered by our sports coach, run over the lunchtime period. We enter a wide variety of School Games events and use a specialist P.E teacher to train the children for these events.
